Dr Kean Poon is a leading scholar in the field of psychology. She is a chartered educational psychologist of the British Psychological Society and a registered educational psychologist of the Hong Kong Association of Educational Psychologists. She is currently a senior lecturer at the University of New South Wales, Sydney and an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Special Education and Counselling at The Education University Hong Kong.
Dr Poon works with children, adolescents, adults and families across clinical and educational settings. She is passionate about helping young people with various developmental needs, supporting families through challenges, and empowering clients to build on their strengths in a safe and supportive environment. Her approach is collaborative, culturally sensitive, and strengths-based, drawing on evidence-based practices. She provides therapy in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.
Dr Poon has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, and her work has been cited in over 100 studies. She also developed evidence-based training apps to enhance executive function in Chinese children with special educational needs. Her work has received silver medals and special awards at the 2019 Silicon Valley International Invention Festival, as well as the 2020 and 2022 International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada, where she was recognised as the Top 10 best women inventors. She also received the 2020/21 President’s Award for Outstanding Knowledge Transfer.
Outside academia, Dr Poon contributes her expertise as an associate fellow of the Hong Kong Psychological Society and a member of the Rehabilitation Subcommittee of the Riding for the Disabled Association. She is a former expert member of the Committee on Candidates with Specific Learning Disabilities at the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority.
