A Word from the Centre Director
Dear brothers, sisters and friends,
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1: 2-4)
It’s been a year since the World Health Organisation officially called the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. Sadly, millions of lives have been lost. Many still suffer long term health problems as a result of contracting the virus. Thankfully we have managed the crisis decisively and effectively in Australia. Vaccination programs have started in Australia and other countries, and bring a more positive outlook on the pandemic.
However, our perseverance is still required in dealing with new challenges, with coronavirus mutations in different countries potentially causing issues for current treatments and vaccines. Many medical experts say that we may have to learn to live with the coronavirus for a long time to come, even with vaccination available.
Life is indeed not all smooth sailing at the best of times. In the past year, I have worked with many people who had to deal with other serious problems in life on top of the coronavirus. Like many other families, my family has found ourselves in a very challenging situation. My 99 year-old mother, who lives in Hong Kong, has met a real test of her faith last year. Firstly, she had chosen to undergo several months of chemotherapy for lymphoma. Some might wonder about the wisdom of having this agonising treatment at her advanced age. It was more mind-shattering when she was cruelly struck with another blow just as we thought we could finally celebrate the completion of the treatment!
While she was in a hospital for a check-up, my mother sustained a fracture of the femur head when she took herself to the toilet during the night without calling for the assistance of the busy nurses. With her children, she bravely made the difficult decision to accept the risky but necessary surgery, knowing full well that the operation was life-threatening because of her heart condition and frail age. She would do everything possible in order to live to meet and cuddle the great grandchildren from Australia whom she still hasn’t seen because of the pandemic. Nevertheless, she had truly put her life in the hands of her God. And she was ready to meet Him in heaven, with peace in her heart.
By the grace of God, my mother survived the surgery. She then persevered with the painful rehabilitation programs for months until she could walk. Because of her extraordinary fortitude, she can now wait for her many grandchildren and great grandchildren to visit and cuddle her in Hong Kong! Just like most people that I saw last year, they persevered and eventually overcame their difficulties.
Vaccination programs have started in Australia with an aim to help your body develop immunity against the coronavirus. It’s important that we ourselves make a contribution to protect ourselves, our families and friends from the virus by participating in the vaccination programs, if at all possible with medical advice, sooner rather than later.
As my mother will take the vaccine if medical advice allows, I hope you and your family will also be given the protection that the vaccines provide for you to live a healthy and fulfilling life.
May the grace of the Lord be upon you and your family!
