--- A Word from Centre Director ---

Dear brothers, sisters and friends,

It has been six months since we first heard the news of a new coronavirus. After two months of lockdown, we have successfully suppressed the spread of the virus to the degree that the social restriction measures in Australia are now being eased. Experts remain wary of the risk of a ‘second wave’ of infection.

We are so thankful that Australia has avoided the extent of the loss of lives seen in other countries. Still, so many families have suffered so much grief and heartache in the past few months. We mourn with those who mourn over the loss of their loved ones. We pray for the people who suffer hardship and insecurity because of the upheaval and isolation brought upon by the pandemic. We also remember those who are further troubled by other worrying problems at this time.

Daily life has become a lot tougher for many people here in Australia and around the world. It is not yet over. Until effective treatment or a vaccine becomes available, we should not expect our lives to return to anything resembling the 'old normal’.

The greatest challenge for many at present is how to manage the ‘current normal’ effectively. We have already discovered some new ways of life in the past three months: the use of Zoom and working from home. While these existed before the pandemic, their effect on what will be the ‘new normal’ after the pandemic may bring benefits to us. We need patience, ingenuity and adaptability, and much more, to adjust to these trying times.

The book of Job in the Bible tells us a story about a good man named Job. All was going well with Job and yet suddenly he lost all his wealth, servants and children due to invaders and natural disasters. He was then afflicted with disease. His suffering was almost too much for Job to bear.

Remarkably he did not lose his faith in God. He was never shown ‘why’ he suffered, and yet he recognised that his understanding was limited. In the end, God restored Job’s health and gave him more properties, new children, and a long life. He ended up much better off than he was in the beginning.

In suffering, Job never gave up hope or faith in God. When life is tough, like Job we must hold steadfastly to faith and hope in God and His power in our lives.

Like Job, we are facing an unprecedented challenges in our lives. This pandemic has caused so much trouble, but it is also a time to slow down and reflect on many aspects of our fragile lives and existence in this world. We can take stock of everything and reassess our lives.

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.” (Ephesians 1:17-19)

May the Lord of peace himself give you peace especially at this time.
