A Word from the Centre Director

Dear brothers, sisters and friends,
“ And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” (1 Peter 5: 10)
We have been hit with wave after wave of challenges over the past few years. We have experienced drought, bushfire and floods here in Australia, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic that has swept the world. And just when we thought things were under control, war broke out in Ukraine. Thousands of innocent lives have been taken, millions have lost their homes, and enormous geopolitical tensions have caused economic damage that may take years to repair. Though these events have happened halfway around the globe, families here in Australia are not exempt from the consequences, with rising prices and concerns of recession already causing worry and suffering.
In the Chinese Australian community, we are encountering more new migrants from Hong Kong who are seeking new lives for themselves and their children in Australia because of the political changes there. Some of the new migrants find it difficult to adjust to their new lives in a country with different language and culture. As a result, they suffer much emotional and spiritual pain that sometimes gives rise to marriage and family conflict.
The Bible reminds us that “the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.” (Romans 8:22) Since the beginning of time, the world has been full of suffering. Suffering will surely occur in our lives, but also those of the next generation. Even advancements in science and technology will not eliminate all human pains. The Bible says that “there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain” (Revelation 21:4), but it will only happen when the new heaven and new earth arrive one day in the future.
The Bible indeed gives counsel on how we can best endure pain and suffering. During times of difficulty and suffering we all must encounter, it is crucial to turn to the right source of comfort and hope. In His words, God can give us grace and power to overcome every trial and tribulation.
However, we cannot just leave the suffering of people to God. Importantly, the Bible also instructs us that “as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers”. (Galatians 6:10) It was for this reason that First Light Care started counselling services in Sydney in 1998 when the Chinese Australian community at the time needed help and support to deal with their pain as they met various problems living in a new country.
We’ll never live in this world without pain and suffering. After nearly a quarter of a century, opportunities still present themselves in the decades ahead for FLC to support people who find themselves needing help in dealing with problems in their life journey.
We thank God that FLC has been given a new permanent counselling centre at West Ryde as our home base to reach out to serve the community. At this moment, we still need to raise over $80,000 for the renovation and furnishing of the new centre, and another $65,000 to cover the deficit of the counselling service operating fund of this financial year. Please make a donation if you can.
We thank you for acting as a Good Samaritan in supporting us to give a helping hand to people in pain.
May the grace and peace of the Lord be upon you and your family!
Gerald Cheung
Centre Director

Please specially pray and support for renovation expenses of our new counselling centre
We are thankful that the renovation of the new permanent counselling centre at West Ryde will be underway soon.
We are thankful that First Light Care has purchased a property in West Ryde close to the railway station, using the building fund set up with help from donors. We are thankful for God’s provision in this and the generosity of the donors that will help reduce our long term rental expense!
We sincerely thank those who have recently responded to our appeal for financial support of $100,000 for the renovation and furnishing of the new centre. As of 31 May 2022, we have received $13,400 donation specified for the renovation.
We still need to raise over $80,000 for the renovation of the new centre from which our ministry will continue to serve the community in the years ahead.
We sincerely ask you to please support and help with our renovation expenses.  You may use a credit card to make a tax-deductible donation by calling us on (02) 9211 9998.
You may also download and use the donation form on First Light Care‘s website (https://www.firstlightcare.org.au/supportus#donations) to arrange other payment methods. Thank you for your support!

Ms Joy Song
